Farewell - and hello!
In 24 hours, and for the last time, I will walk into the office where I have served as Head of School since 2005. I don’t have much planned other than a final walk through the campus, a farewell here and there, and lunch with a few members of staff who haven’t yet gone on summer break.
The file drawers are empty, the shelves are devoid of books, the laptop turned off. I left a few pictures on the walls just so the new head wouldn’t walk into a completely sterile space. But for the most part, I am no longer there.
It is all bittersweet. I can’t help but take stock of the past 20 years as head of school and the last 40 years in education. Something I have always loved about this work in schools is that purpose is baked right in! No searching for deeper meaning. I know what I do and why I do it: I educate children and young adults. I create learning environments (physical and emotional) that allow them to be the very best versions of themselves. To be knowledgeable of the world and to have the tools to discover, discern, discuss, and decide how they can find their own purpose.
So, farewell!
This has been good run, as they say.
And, hello! What comes next will be joyful, unexpected and unscripted. It will embody, even more fully than before, EdgeworkLife. Stay tuned!
